A sumac (or soumak) knotted carpet is a type of flat-woven rug made using the soumak weaving technique, which is distinguished from traditional hand-knotted or pile carpets. Instead of creating a plush surface with knots, sumac carpets are made by tightly wrapping colored weft threads around the warp yarns to form decorative patterns. This results in a strong, thick, flat-weave rug with a smooth front and a slightly ragged back where the excess threads are left hanging.
